Professor Farmer received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1983. Her field of interest is the history of medieval Europe, with special attention to issues surrounding France, women, gender, towns, saints’ cults, and monasticism. Her major publications include Gender and Difference in the Middle Ages (University of Minnesota Press, 2003) and Surviving Poverty in Medieval Paris: Gender, Ideology and the Daily Lives of the Poor (Cornell University Press, 2002). "Her current research includes "Women and Work in Medieval Paris," and "The Medieval French Melting Pot: Mediterranean Immigrants and the Transformation of French Material Culture."
